Malaysia Urges Development of Skilled Talent for Economic Transition

Kuala Lampur:The country needs to cultivate skilled talent to support its shift towards a high-value economy, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Zambry highlighted several initiatives to develop such talent, including the Malaysia Higher Education Blueprint 2026-2035, the 13th Malaysia Plan, and the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy 2030.

In a speech delivered by Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr. Aminuddin Hassim at the Industry Nexus (INDEX) 2026: TVET Collaboration Hub programme, Zambry emphasized the importance of talent transformation for economic transformation. He pointed out that industries must progress up the value chain, high-growth sectors should expand, and quality investments need to bring in technology and better jobs, all of which depend on skilled individuals.

Zambry explained that INDEX serves as more than just a platform to connect institutions and industries; it aligns industry needs with the strengths of higher education. He advocated for deeper collaboration, suggesting that industries should work alongside educational institutions to identify needs, develop competencies, and provide real-world experience opportunities.

Additionally, Zambry stressed the necessity for polytechnics and community colleges to strengthen high-impact programs that align with industry demands. He argued for a proactive approach where industry needs are identified first, and then programs and talent are developed accordingly, addressing the skills mismatch effectively.
