Malaysia Urges Immediate End to Violence in Sudan Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has called for an immediate end to the violence and the protection of civilians in full compliance with international humanitarian law, as the humanitarian crisis in El Fasher and Darfur region of Sudan worsens. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his deep concern about the escalating tragedy, describing it as a humanitarian catastrophe characterized by mass killing, starvation, and displacement.

According to Union of OIC News Agencies, Anwar Ibrahim highlighted reports of atrocities that may amount to crimes against humanity, and even genocide, stating that such actions are intolerable. He emphasized the urgent need for the cessation of violence and stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians under international humanitarian law.

Further reports indicate that displaced individuals have been forced to relocate to various locations within North Kordofan and several towns in White Nile State, South Sudan. The ongoing conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, involves the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Efforts for resolution through regional and international mediations have so far been unsuccessful.

The conflict has had devastating consequences, resulting in the deaths of 20 people and the displacement of over 15 million, including refugees and internally displaced persons, as reported by United Nations and local sources.
