Malaysian Ministry Expects Strong Turnout for Upcoming MotoGP

Sepang:The Ministry of Youth and Sports is anticipating a strong turnout for the upcoming Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) at the Sepang International Circuit, following the recent success of the Formula One (F1) event.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, expressed optimism that the momentum from the F1 event will attract 200,000 visitors to the MotoGP from October 30 to November 1, surpassing the previous attendance of over 190,000.

Dr. Taufiq highlighted the enthusiasm among Malaysians and international visitors, which he believes will carry over from F1 to the MotoGP. He conveyed these sentiments at a media conference for MotoGP 2026, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Sepang International Circuit and Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation.

He also expressed hopes for Malaysian racer Muhammad Hakim Danish Ramli to perform well, supported by local fans' encouragement, as he competes at his home circuit.

Regarding Sepang's potential as a replacement venue for an F1 race amid West Asian turmoil, Dr. Taufiq mentioned that a special committee would be formed to evaluate the feasibility and economic benefits of hosting future F1 events. A meeting with the Cabinet is planned to discuss the matter further.

Dr. Taufiq noted that a study is in progress to measure the economic impact of the recent F1 event, focusing on broader economic benefits beyond ticket sales, including trader participation and the hospitality sector.

Addressing traffic congestion during the F1 race, he assured that measures are being implemented to improve the situation for the MotoGP, with collaboration with relevant agencies. Additionally, he supported the proposal for more train stops at the Sepang circuit to enhance public transport access, which would require inter-ministerial cooperation.
