Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has also been affected by the crisis and disruptions to the energy sector related to the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz. However, the impact will not be as severe as in countries that have no oil and gas resources.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani stated that although Malaysia is a net importer of oil, the country's position as a net exporter of gas helps to balance the chain of impacts from affecting the entire domestic industry. "The Strait of Hormuz issue is actually more related to the energy sector. When the energy sector is affected, all industries will be affected," he explained.
Johari emphasized that Malaysia will experience similar disruptions as other nations, but the presence of domestic oil and gas resources mitigates the extent of these impacts. He shared these insights with reporters at the Invest in Perak Day 2026 programme, following US President Donald Trump's announcement that the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a 'new US territory.'
