Malaysia’s Quran Waqf Project Nearing One Million Target

Malaysia: Malaysia's One Million Quran Waqf Solidarity Project, initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2023, is approaching its ambitious target. With 700,000 copies already printed and the remaining 300,000 in production, the complete set of one million copies is expected to be ready within three to four months.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Restu Foundation executive chairman Abdul Latiff Mirasa announced that over 500,000 copies have been distributed both locally and internationally, reaching regions in Africa and Asia. This public waqf initiative aims to expand Islamic outreach and strengthen Malaysia's position as a global hub for Quranic distribution. Abdul Latiff emphasized the project's significant impact on Malaysia and highlighted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's role as a global ambassador of the Quran, with regular shipments being sent worldwide.

In January 2023, Anwar Ibrahim announced the production of one million Quran copies for global distribution in response to Quran burning incidents in Sweden. This initiative aims to promote understanding of the Quran's message across diverse backgrounds and faiths. Malaysia is also emerging as a leading publisher in Quran translations, covering 30 languages with plans to add 20 to 30 more. Abdul Latiff noted that 12 new language translations, including Vietnamese, Thai, Lao, Iban, Urdu, and Russian, are expected to be completed this year.

The Restu Foundation has already translated the Quran into several languages, including Malay, English, Khmer, and many others. Abdul Latiff stated that around 100 experts are involved in translation and manuscript illumination, collaborating with institutions in Turkiye and Saudi Arabia. All editions undergo strict vetting under the Uthmani script method approved by the Home Ministry. Each language edition requires three to six months for completion, ensuring adherence to Ahl Sunnah Wal Jamaah beliefs.

Additionally, the foundation is preparing the Mushaf Malaysia MADANI, a manuscript expected to be launched by the Prime Minister during Ramadan. This hand-copied manuscript, created over five years, integrates traditional Malay Jawi calligraphy with digital technology, allowing readers to access recitations, multilingual translations, and tajwid references via smartphones, preserving cultural heritage while embracing modern advancements.
