Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has reaffirmed that its support for the Palestinian struggle is grounded in humanitarian principles and universal justice, rather than being driven solely by political sentiment or allegiance to specific groups. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated this long-standing position has remained consistent, including on matters involving Hamas, one of the entities within the Palestinian struggle.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad emphasized that Malaysia has always advocated for the rights of the Palestinian people to return to their homeland and establish a sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He clarified that Malaysia's support is not for Hamas per se, but for the overall Palestinian struggle, with Hamas being a part of it.
In the Dewan Rakyat during the Minister's Question Time, Mohamad addressed inquiries from Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PN-Sik) regarding the government's efforts to defend Muslims in Gaza. He condemned the excessive violence in the region and noted a shift in stance from countries that previously supported Israel, following the violence inflicted on Palestinian civilians.
Mohamad announced Malaysia's intention to propose reforms at the upcoming UN General Assembly, particularly concerning the UNSC veto power. He highlighted the need for limiting veto use in cases of genocide and crimes against humanity, aiming for broader representation in non-permanent membership from Asia, Africa, and South America. This proposal, he stated, has garnered positive feedback from like-minded nations, including Malaysia.
