Tumpat: A 46-year-old local man is believed to have been fatally slashed by his cousin in an incident at Kampung Kok Bedullah here yesterday. The victim, identified as Mohd Shuhairi Hashim, 46, was confirmed dead at the scene.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kelantan Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, confirmed that police have detained the suspect involved and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. He mentioned that a urine screening test conducted on the suspect was confirmed positive for drugs and possession, adding that further details regarding the case would be released in an official statement.
Meanwhile, the victim's mother, Wan Salma Wan Said, 68, reported that she found her son covered in a pool of blood near their house. She stated that at the time of the incident, she was upstairs in the house preparing to sleep when she heard someone groaning in pain. Upon opening the house window, she saw her son lying down and groaning in pain, with the suspect, her nephew, shouting nearby. Wan Salma believes there might have been a misunderstanding between them that led to the incident.
Wan Salma said the suspect had earlier mentioned that the victim did something hurtful and personal but did not elaborate further before leaving for his house. Following the incident, she contacted her other child and made a police report. It is believed that the victim was washing an excavator alone before the suspect approached and attacked him with an unknown sharp object.
Tumpat District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Khairi Shafie, suggested that old grudges stemming from a land inheritance dispute and the circulation of a video of the suspect's child in a compromising situation are believed to be the motive for the attack. He revealed that the victim was found at 11:20 pm lying in front of his house covered in a pool of blood, with severe injuries to the head and right leg, and his left hand severed, believed to be due to being hacked with a long machete.
Subsequently, police confiscated a long machete suspected to have been used in the attack. The public who have information regarding the incident are urged to contact the Investigating Officer DSP Dean Jonathan Jalin at 09-7257222 or any nearby police station.
