Lahad Datu: A 59-year-old man was arrested during Op Bakau yesterday for allegedly encroaching into the Lahad Datu Forest Reserve. The operation, a collaboration between the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Sabah Forestry Department, uncovered unauthorized activities within the forest reserve.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lahad Datu Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, reported that the joint operation discovered 2.02 hectares of land that had been illegally encroached upon. The investigation revealed various unauthorized activities, including mangrove tree logging, open burning, and the cultivation of oil palm, fruits, and vegetables. Additionally, structures such as a residential house and a swiftlet bird nest were found to have been constructed without the necessary permissions.

The suspect is believed to have violated the Forest Enactment 1968 and has been handed over to the Lahad Datu Forestry Department for further investigation. Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar emphasized the importance of such integrated operations in safeguarding forest reserves, waterways, and coastal areas. He noted the role these efforts play in preserving natural ecosystems and ensuring national maritime security.
