Melaka: The management entrusted with running four wakaf hotels under Perbadanan Wakaf Nasional Berhad (PWNB) has been reminded to maintain the hotels' image with care. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar emphasized the importance of upholding this image to prevent any misconceptions about the management of wakaf in the country.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Mohd Na'im articulated that the general public often associates wakaf with the construction of mosques on wakaf land alongside cemeteries. He highlighted the need to demonstrate that the Islamic model can also serve as a foundation for creating wakaf that benefits broader interests. The revenue generated from these wakaf hotels can be directed to support those in need, showcasing the concept of wakaf as a crucial instrument in the development of the Islamic economy. He communicated these insights to reporters during an Iftar event with orphans, held in conjunction with National Wakaf Month.
The event was also attended by Melaka Education, Higher Education and Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman, Wakaf Zakat and Haji (Jawhar) Department director-general Datuk Selamat Paigo, and Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia (YWM) chief executive officer Dr Ridzwan Bakar.
Dr Mohd Na'im noted that PWNB currently manages four wakaf hotels located in Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Perak. He further shared that zakat collections have seen an increase in each state, signifying enhanced public awareness and trust, which he attributed to the transparent administration by agencies responsible for zakat collection.
