Marble Sculpture Programme Showcases Uniqueness Of Local Geological Materials

Ipoh: The six-day Marble Sculpture programme, organised by the Ipoh branch of the National Art Gallery from May 18 to 23, highlighted the uniqueness of local geological materials through a contemporary art approach. The event focused on creating limestone-based sculptures, showcasing a natural treasure synonymous with the state of Perak.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme, held in Ipoh, spotlighted seven artists, all natives of Perak, representing diverse artistic approaches. The artists included Dr. Ramlan Abdullah from Taiping; Dr. Choong Kam Kow and Tan Vooi Yam from Bercham; Daud Abdul Rahim from Lenggong; as well as Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin, Ibrahim Mohd Don, and Hilal Mazlan from Kuala Kangsar.

Throughout the programme, a total of seven sculptures were successfully produced, reflecting the diversity of ideas, artistic approaches, and creative interpretations of the artists towards the natural material that forms part of Perak's identity. Each work produced not only embodies high aesthetic value but also highlights narratives surrounding nature, culture, history, and the relationship between humans and the environment.

The event, besides opening up new dimensions in aesthetic interaction with natural resources, also has the potential to strengthen the arts and cultural tourism sector while introducing a unique local artistic identity to the public and tourists, particularly in Perak. The National Art Gallery conveyed its appreciation and congratulations to all parties involved, especially the artists who successfully produced quality works rich in creativity, elevating marble sculpture as a manifestation of the nation's contemporary visual art medium.

The artworks produced are expected to become one of the attractions when the Ipoh branch is officially opened to the public soon, providing opportunities for the public and art enthusiasts to appreciate the uniqueness of local sculpture. It is hoped that initiatives such as this will serve as a catalyst for the development of local sculpture while strengthening Malaysia's position as a progressive and competitive visual arts hub at both the national and international levels.
