Kota kinabalu: The construction of the Naval Region 2 Headquarters (MAWILLA 2) jetty, which began in 2022 at a cost of RM122.9 million, is expected to be completed by May next year, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He highlighted that the new 300-metre jetty would play a crucial role in strengthening the headquarters' preparedness.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled emphasized the importance of the MAWILLA 2 jetty project, as the headquarters is responsible for overseeing the country's naval defence in the region and for monitoring critical waters, including the South China Sea, the Sulawesi Sea, and the Sulu Sea. 'The jetty is planned to accommodate the increase or deployment of ships to the headquarters. From a planning perspective, 20 naval ships are needed here to ensure effective operations in safeguarding the South China Sea, the Sulu Sea, and the Sulawesi Sea,' he stated during a media briefing.
The Defence Minister conveyed this information after inspecting the MAWILLA 2 jetty construction project, which has currently reached 75 percent completion.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled addressed the readiness of the Malaysian Armed Forces for the 17th Sabah State Election. He assured that although the situation does not currently necessitate direct military involvement, they are prepared for any eventuality. He advised that the democratic process be conducted responsibly to prevent any potential impact on national security.
The minister, during his two-day official visit, also reviewed several projects under the MADANI Economy Programme, including a kelulut (stingless bee) honey production site and a smart zero-carbon hydroponic project.
