Kuala lumpur: Maxis has celebrated the graduation of the inaugural Menuju Gemilang programme cohort who sat for the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, involving 40 students from schools across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Sarawak.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Maxis stated that the programme, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MOE), is an initiative to empower underprivileged students to excel in SPM while equipping them for higher education. Deputy director-general of Education Malaysia (School Operations Sector) Zainal Abas emphasized that the partnership aligns with the Malaysian Education Plan 2026-2035 in empowering underserved youths to become skilled, well-rounded individuals ready for university.
The ceremony also marked the admission of 200 new students into the programme, bringing the total 2026 cohort to 400. Maxis chairman Datuk Johan Idris was also present to congratulate the students and share words of encouragement.
According to Maxis, the inaugural cohort, comprising 240 students from 20 selected schools in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Sarawak, completed the programme after a three-month fast-track preparation for SPM 2025. The company noted that the number of students scoring 7As and above doubled to 33 percent compared with their trial examination results, with four students achieving 9As or more.
To support their transition to higher education, Maxis is awarding RM50,000 in education grants to the programme's top performers. Maxis chief corporate affairs officer Azizul Abdul Rahman highlighted that the initiative was designed to remove barriers to higher education and ensure university aspirations are within reach for high-potential students regardless of their background.
Chua Pak Ron, who scored 10As in SPM 2025 and is currently studying at Melaka Matriculation College, shared that the programme gave him the confidence to believe that pursuing higher education was within reach.
Beyond academic tutoring, the programme includes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) camps, leadership boot camps, and post-SPM mentoring on education pathways and scholarship opportunities. The programme has also been extended from 18 months to 24 months to provide continuous support after students complete SPM, with each participant receiving a laptop for use during the programme and in their subsequent studies.
Menuju Gemilang was launched in 2025 as an expansion of Maxis eKelas, the company's flagship digital learning initiative for B40 communities. Participants are selected based on academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and leadership potential.
