Maxis Wins Technology Award For Pioneering Initiative To Combat Fraud

Kuala lumpur: Maxis Berhad (Maxis) won the Digital-Telecommunications category at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards (MTEA) 2026 for its Fake Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) Detection Dashboard last Thursday. Maxis announced that the dashboard is designed to detect threats from unauthorised or fake BTS, providing critical information to support regulatory action.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, fraudsters have been deploying illegal equipment to mimic legitimate network towers, tricking nearby mobile devices into connecting to them. This could potentially expose users to scam SMS and localised service disruptions. Maxis's fake BTS dashboard integrates advanced data analytics to continuously monitor and identify network anomalies. Developed in-house, the platform is highly adaptable, ensuring it can counter new and evolving fraudulent tactics.

"This enables a clearer distinction between routine network issues and malicious activity, while supporting regulators and law enforcement agencies in taking further action," the statement said. Maxis highlighted that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) commended its efforts in curbing fake BTS and emphasized the importance of industry-led innovation in addressing emerging threats.

The company added that enhanced network monitoring capabilities supported the timely identification of illegal transmissions, which enabled effective enforcement action and strengthened protection for Malaysians against evolving scam risks. Meanwhile, Maxis chief network officer Yap Chee Sun noted that the in-house capability strengthened the telco's ability to respond swiftly and supported enforcement action by the MCMC and other authorities.

"As the threat landscape shifts, so must our approach to network security. We are honoured by this recognition, which reinforces our commitment to deliver a fast, reliable, and secure network where our customers can stay connected with greater confidence," he said. The deployment complemented Maxis's broader initiatives to enhance overall network security by building on its existing safeguards, as the company continued to work closely with enforcement authorities in line with national efforts to combat digital fraud.
