Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on telecommunications and information and communications technology (ICT). The MoU exchange, held here in conjunction with the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025, was witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MCMC was represented by its deputy managing director (Regulatory and Corporate), Datuk Zurkarnain Mohd Yasin, while ANATEL was represented by its president, Carlos Manuel Baigorri. Fahmi stated that the MoU is crucial as it enables MCMC to forge cooperation with a network of regulators in South America, facilitating the exchange of expertise and experience between both sides. He noted the importance of understanding different experiences and situations to enhance connectivity in the region.
Fahmi highlighted that the MoU exchange was historic, following Brazilian President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva's state visit to Malaysia in October, during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. This marks the first MoU between MCMC and a communications regulatory body in the Americas, focusing on information sharing for developing legal and regulatory frameworks in response to the evolving technological landscape.
Zurkarnain emphasized that the MoU aims at capacity building and the sharing of information on legal and regulatory frameworks to tackle emerging issues in a dynamic industry, particularly concerning content-related matters. He mentioned the significance of sharing experiences among regulators in areas like artificial intelligence and quantum communications.
Also present at the event were Malaysian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ahmad Kamrizamil Mohd Riza and Communications Ministry's Communications Technology Division undersecretary Ahmad Norhad Zahari.
