Kuching: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Sarawak police have successfully dismantled a syndicate involved in the theft of telecommunications equipment during an operation known as Ops Lusuh, which took place from June 18 to 19 in Kuching, Padawan, and Kota Samarahan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MCMC revealed that during the operation, authorities raided premises in Kota Samarahan suspected to have been used as a storage facility for the stolen equipment. The inspections led to the discovery of various telecommunications equipment, such as base station batteries and Remote Radio Units (RRUs), which are believed to have been illegally obtained and belonged to telecommunications companies.
Police have detained two individuals to assist with ongoing investigations, and all the equipment found during the raids has been seized as evidence. MCMC emphasized that theft and vandalism involving telecommunications assets are not only criminal offenses but also have the potential to disrupt communication services for consumers and impact critical sectors.
Offenders could face legal consequences under Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588). This section of the law imposes penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, imprisonment for up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC noted that the operation underscores the importance of collaboration between MCMC, the police, the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, and other relevant enforcement agencies in combating crimes that pose threats to the security of the country's telecommunications infrastructure. This strategic partnership will continue to be fortified to ensure the safety, stability, and resilience of the nation's communication network. MCMC also urged the public to report any suspicious activities involving telecommunications assets to the authorities.
