MCMC Investigates Facebook Post Allegedly Insulting Islam

Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation into an individual over Facebook content suspected of insulting Islam.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the investigation centers on content related to the use of the word 'lighad', which is associated with verse 18 of Surah al-Hashr, mentioned in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Budget 2027 speech.

The MCMC noted that the content allegedly mocked a Quranic verse, raising public concern. To facilitate the investigation, a statement has been recorded from the individual involved, and a mobile phone and an eSIM have been seized for forensic analysis.

The commission stated that the case is being examined under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which could result in a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, if convicted.

MCMC emphasized the importance of exercising freedom of expression on social media responsibly, with respect for religious sensitivities to maintain harmony in Malaysia's multiracial and multireligious society.
