MCMC Investigates Viral Video on Budget 2027 Misinformation

Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a viral video that allegedly contains false and misleading information about the Sales and Service Tax (SST) and income tax relief in the 2027 Budget.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MCMC has received public complaints about the video, which has been widely shared on social media. The commission is concerned that the spread of such information could lead to confusion about national taxation policies and influence the public's financial decisions based on incorrect data.

The MCMC stated that it has referred the issue to the Ministry of Finance and is currently reviewing the video's content, including its dissemination context and potential public impact. Further actions might be taken if it is found to violate laws, such as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Emphasizing responsible use of freedom of speech, the MCMC warned against the spread of false information that could harm public interest. The public is encouraged to verify information about the 2027 Budget through official sources such as the Ministry of Finance's portal, Sebenarnya.my, the AIFA chatbot on WhatsApp, and other official channels before accepting or sharing such information.
