MCMC Receives Over 200,000 Takedown Requests, Majority Related to Gambling and Scams

Pagoh: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received 203,918 takedown requests from the public for social media platforms from January 1 until last night. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that 91 per cent of these requests were related to online gambling and scams.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, 61 per cent of the content flagged for removal pertained to gambling, while 30 per cent was linked to scams. Fahmi shared this information with reporters after the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) programme at the Mini Library of Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir Syed Ismail, located in the Pagoh Higher Education Hub. Attendees included Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah, MCMC managing director Abdul Karim Fakir Ali, and MCMC state affairs chief officer Bukhari Yahya.

The remaining content removal requests involved issues such as pornography, bullying or harassment, and unauthorised services. Fahmi noted that Facebook was the platform where 81 per cent of online gambling content and 58 per cent of scam content were identified. TikTok was reported to have 99 per cent of pornographic content, while 90 per cent of bullying or harassment cases were noted on Tumblr. These findings are based on public reports, and MCMC takes appropriate action upon receiving complaints.

Regarding the KIS initiative, as of March 31, a total of 47 programmes have been conducted at higher education institutions nationwide, engaging 23,196 students. This campaign is part of the Communications Ministry’s ongoing efforts through MCMC to empower youths in tackling digital threats. Today’s event included participation from 80 students and 20 facilitators from Student Representative Councils of higher education institutions in Pagoh, such as International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir.
