MCMC to Collaborate with Police and EC to Tackle Misinformation Ahead of Sabah Polls

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been tasked with coordinating efforts with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Election Commission (EC) to address the spread of misinformation as the 17th Sabah State Election approaches. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that complaints have already been received about fake photos and posters of election candidates, even though the official election period is expected to commence in November.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi expressed concerns that the continuous spread of false information could significantly impact voter behavior. He emphasized the need for firm action, ensuring that the EC and PDRM have a dedicated approach to swiftly handle misinformation, particularly on social media platforms. This initiative, he stressed, is not politically driven but aims to ensure a smooth and fair election process for all parties involved.

Fahmi also mentioned plans for a meeting with social media companies next week to discuss prompt actions against false or misleading content that could compromise the election's integrity. In addition to addressing election-related issues, Fahmi officiated the '2025 Anak Pantai' SPM Excellence Seminar at Mahsa Avenue International College, which involved 115 students from nine schools in the Lembah Pantai constituency. The seminar, organized in collaboration with various local organizations, aims to provide holistic preparation for students sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination this year.

The minister further announced plans to introduce industry exposure and internship opportunities for students after their SPM exams, focusing on those from the People's Housing Project (PPR) areas and local communities. This initiative is designed to give students a better understanding of the working environment, with collaborations in place with companies in Lembah Pantai to facilitate industrial visits and internships. Fahmi expressed hope that these opportunities would inspire and motivate students as they transition from academic to professional life.
