MCMC Urges Social Media Responsibility Amid Election Period

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a reminder to social media users to act ethically and responsibly when sharing content during the election period. The commission emphasized the importance of maintaining civility and prudence in expressing differing political views, which are a normal part of democratic practice, without inciting violence.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MCMC highlighted that digital platforms should be used for sharing authentic and constructive information, rather than becoming arenas for spreading hatred, provocation, or insults that could threaten national harmony and stability. The Commission referenced Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which prohibits the use of network facilities or application services to disseminate content that is seditious, touches on 3R elements (religion, race, and the royal institution), or is obscene, false, threatening, or highly offensive.

MCMC warned that individuals convicted of violating this law may face penalties including a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both. The commission reiterated its commitment to taking firm action, including investigations and enforcement, against any parties found in violation of the law. MCMC also underscored its ongoing collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Election Commission (EC) to ensure accountability and maintain public order.
