Media Must Embrace Technology Without Compromising Values, Says PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged media practitioners not to lose sight of values, ethics, and national identity in the race to embrace rapid technological advancement. He emphasized that this reminder is crucial as the country risks going astray if it fails to remain vigilant against challenges that accompany technological progress.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar mentioned that while freedom in information technology, digital technology, and artificial intelligence must be upheld, these new technologies should not be devoid of values. He added that the issue deserves greater attention from columnists. The prime minister highlighted the shared responsibility of the government, through Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to support the media. Anwar assured that the government would listen to views and accept criticism with an open mind because the country cannot afford to be divided on such matters.

Anwar cited history, noting that Western dominance of global media enabled the shaping of narratives based on specific agendas. He pointed out that the world is facing a new power seeking to challenge the freedom and sovereignty of nations by controlling technology and advancing ideological or cultural values that may be alien to local societies. The prime minister explained that the concept of the 'captive mind' has evolved from being associated with political and colonial influence to being driven by technology, including digitalization. He acknowledged the challenge countries face in mastering emerging technologies while navigating the technological transition.

The prime minister commended the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), with the support of PETRONAS, and the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) for their efforts to drive media innovation and reforms, ensuring the country does not become trapped in a 'captive mind' narrative. Anwar expressed appreciation to media practitioners for their commitment to their responsibilities, thanking journalists for upholding the principles of press freedom and democracy by providing views, constructive criticism, and recommendations, in addition to news coverage.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including MPI President Datuk Yong Soo Heong, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, and Bernama Deputy Editor-in-Chief (News Service) Mohd Shukri Ishak.
