Megah Port Management, DoE Jointly Organise Oil Spills Contingency Programme

LABUAN, Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM), the containerised port operator in Labuan, and the Department of Environment (DoE) jointly organised an Oil Spill Contingency Programme in conjunction with the upcoming World Ozone Day.

The half-day programme today was aimed at raising awareness and enhancing preparedness for potential oil spill incidents that could severely impact the environment.

MPM chief operating officer Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong said various government agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department, and the Marine Department, participated in the programme and shared their experiences and contingency plans for addressing oil spills.

He said Labuan Port Authority (LPA), as the regulatory body for Labuan port also played a crucial role in facilitating the event, with key industry players and port users joining the discussions.

‘The event also featured an oil spill contingency exhibition by the participating agencies, providing a platform for information exchange and demonstration of best
practices,’ he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman when launching the programme at Liberty Wharf, highlighted the importance of close cooperation between agencies to ensure swift and effective responses to oil spill incidents.

He also emphasised the need for regular programmes of this nature, especially with the involvement of key oil and gas industry players like Petronas, Asian Supply Base, Labuan Shipyard, and other multinational companies.

‘Labuan, being an oil and gas hub with nearly a hundred multinational companies operating here, is not immune to oil spill incidents.

‘We recognise the vital roles played by the DoE, Marine Department, Fire and Rescue Department, and Labuan Port Authority in tackling these issues effectively,’ he said.

At the event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between Megah Port Management and the DoE, emphasising their shared commitment to environmental protection both on land and at sea.
