Melaka: The Melaka government hopes that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in rural areas is among the focuses to be given priority in Budget 2027. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said continuous allocation and support are greatly needed to ensure rural students have opportunities to explore the latest technologies, thereby narrowing the gap with their urban peers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Noor Helmy emphasized the importance of expanding technology exposure programmes such as drones, three-dimensional (3D) printing, and solar cars through practical and interactive activities. He expressed the desire for these initiatives to be continued, highlighting the need for rural students to engage with future technologies in a practical manner rather than solely relying on theoretical learning from textbooks.

Mohd Noor Helmy, who also serves as the Duyong State Assemblyman, noted that such programmes are crucial in allowing students to handle technology equipment themselves. He asserted that early exposure would not only increase students' interest in technical fields but also build their confidence and motivation to pursue high-skilled careers in the future.

'Early exposure to technology can also open up new perspectives among rural students regarding education and career opportunities in STEM-based fields, thereby producing a highly skilled generation,' he said.

He further highlighted the significance of these efforts in narrowing the education gap between urban and rural areas, particularly in terms of access to technology, digital skills, and practical learning experiences. Support through budget allocations is essential to address the community's needs in Duyong and ensure they are considered in Federal development planning, including efforts to expand access to STEM education.

Mohd Noor Helmy argued that investment in STEM education should be seen as a long-term national investment aimed at creating a generation not just as technology users but as innovators. He expressed hope that these efforts would not only boost students' interest in STEM but also inspire them to achieve greater aspirations, thereby narrowing the education gap between urban and rural areas.

Budget 2027 is scheduled to be tabled on October 9.
