Melaka: A total of 666 online scam cases involving losses of about RM19.52 million were reported in Melaka from Jan 1 to yesterday. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan disclosed that 157 cases were recorded by the National Scam Response Centre and 509 by the police.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the scams involved various tactics, including online purchases, love scams, and non-existent investments. The victims ranged from single mothers and civil servants to private sector employees. During the same period, authorities made 399 arrests and filed 231 charges. Most victims were aged between 25 and 40. Women were primarily targeted in love scams and online shopping fraud, while men were more often victims of fake investment schemes.
Fairul Nizam, who also serves as the Rembia state constituency coordinator, shared these insights at the constituency's Aidilfitri Open House, which was attended by over 5,000 visitors. He noted that nine cases were reported yesterday alone, with eight occurring in Melaka Tengah and one in Alor Gajah, leading to losses exceeding RM400,000.
To combat the rising trend of online fraud, the state government is intensifying efforts through talks, exhibitions, and the establishment of the Online Gambling, Fraud and Cybercrime Task Force to raise public awareness.
