Kuala lumpur: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) views the Melaka state election as a 'new platform' to rebuild its strength through a more mature political approach centred on ideas and policies that are clearly communicated to the people. Acting Chairman of the Melaka PKR Leadership Council Adam Adli Abd Halim acknowledged that the party faces a major challenge in rebuilding public confidence after failing to win any state seats in the 15th Melaka state election in 2021.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Adam Adli emphasized the need for the party to prove its acceptability and capability in producing elected representatives who can serve as the people's voice in the Melaka State Legislative Assembly. The party begins this task without holding a single state seat. To overcome this challenge, PKR plans to move away from patronage-based politics towards a more mature political style.
In the 2021 state election, Barisan Nasional (BN) formed the state government after securing 21 of the 28 seats, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) won five and Perikatan Nasional (PN) two. The Melaka State Executive Council (Exco) lineup, however, includes PH assemblymen, reflecting a Unity Government arrangement similar to that at the federal level.
Adam Adli, also a PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) member, stated that PH would approach the state election with humility, aiming to establish itself as a coalition close to the people and responsive to the needs of a multiracial society. He emphasized the importance of respecting voters' maturity and allowing them to make assessments based on proposals presented.
Focusing on critical societal issues, the Hang Tuah Jaya Member of Parliament highlighted the party's intent to address the cost of living, youth, education, home ownership, wages, and mental health. He stressed the need to offer ideas, principles, and policies beneficial to the people, aligning with the 'Justice for All' concept to serve as a platform for all Melaka residents.
Adam Adli, also Deputy Higher Education Minister, asserted that a party's success should be measured not just by political dominance but by the extent to which its ideas and policies benefit the community. The mandate of the Melaka state government will expire on December 31.
Regarding the 2026 PKR National Congress, Adam Adli mentioned that it would focus on fortifying the party ahead of the state election. Melaka will host the congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh from August 13 to 16, with Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim set to officiate the event on August 15.
