Kulim: The implementation of more community-based programmes through the Malaysian Energy Literacy Programme (MELP) is expected to enhance public awareness of the country's energy sector. Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, said this initiative is also in line with the nation's target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening public awareness in line with government plans and policies. Under the MELP, the goal is to increase public understanding of the energy sector, including through the organisation of carnivals. He made these remarks to reporters following the launch of the Energy Literacy Carnival 2025 at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park Sports Complex.
Looking ahead, Akmal Nasrullah highlighted that the ministry's focus for 2026 would be on the energy literacy index, and it plans to collaborate with strategic partners, including the Ministry of Education (MoE). Through this collaboration, school students, via the Delima Portal under MoE, will be able to participate in various energy-related activities, helping them appreciate the importance of energy and learn how to manage energy use more effectively.
He also underlined the necessity of achieving 70 per cent of energy from renewable sources to meet the 2050 net zero carbon target. Currently, 31 per cent of energy comes from renewable sources, including solar, hydro, biodiesel, and biogas. He reiterated the importance of maintaining positive public reception to stay on track.
The Energy Literacy Carnival 2025 is part of an ongoing effort to bring energy policies and knowledge directly to the public. A range of activities is being offered, including forums, interactive zones, family-friendly events, exhibition booths, and sales.
