MetMalaysia Can Issue Quake Warnings Within Eight Minutes

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) can now issue earthquake warnings in just eight minutes, thanks to its extensive network of 80 seismic sensors strategically located across the nation. This capability allows for the swift detection of any seismic activity both within Malaysia and its surrounding regions, as confirmed by Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, the department's director-general.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia is also actively collaborating with countries worldwide by sharing data from these sensors to enhance global earthquake monitoring efforts. The department has also installed 83 tsunami sirens in areas prone to such disasters across Malaysia. These sirens are part of the Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM), which efficiently communicates earthquake information to the public within minutes after detection.

SAATNM is crucial in identifying earthquakes in the region and promptly disseminating related information, including necessary advisories or warnings, especially if there's a risk of tsunamis. Just yesterday, the United States Geological Survey reported a significant 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock. The tremors were felt as far away as Chiang Mai and Bangkok in Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The powerful earthquake has resulted in over 1,000 fatalities, injured 2,376 individuals, and left 30 people missing in Myanmar, highlighting the importance of rapid response systems like those operated by MetMalaysia.
