Metro Manila cops seize P934-M illegal drugs in 1-yr ops


MANILA: Police officers in Metro Manila seized PHP934 million worth of illegal drugs for the past year, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said on Tuesday.

Citing the NCRPO’s data from July 1, 2023 to July 31 this year, Nartatez said the figure includes 133.2 kg. of shabu with an estimated street value of PHP905.7 million; 124.7 kg. of marijuana worth PHP14.96 million; 1.63 kg. of cocaine worth PHP8.66 million; 2.9 kg. of kush worth PHP4.36 million and 156 tablets of ecstasy worth PHP264,350.

In the same period, a total of 14,636 suspects were arrested in 9,489 anti-drug operations.

The five districts covered by the NCRPO are the Manila Police District (MPD), Quezon City Police District (QCPD), Northern Police District (NPD), Southern Police District (SPD), and Eastern Police District (EPD).

‘We have an average of 35 arrests a day of drug personalities and seizure of PHP1.2 million worth of illegal drugs –that is our accomplishment in the campaign aga
inst illegal drugs,’ Nartatez said during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum.

Nartatez also highlighted the continuous implementation of the NCRPO’s 7-Point Action Plan which essentially forms part of establishing a more effective, secure, and community-oriented police visibility in the region.

The 7-Point Action Plan serves as the flagship program of the NCRPO and is aimed at intensifying the peacekeeping efforts of the police force for improved public safety while ensuring the morale and welfare of police personnel.

The plan is composed of the campaign against illegal drugs, loose firearms and fight against terrorism; employing enhanced managing police operations; morale and welfare of personnel; management of human, material and financial resources; revisit, improve and review security plan in vital installations and other areas of concern; revisit, improve and implement risk management plans at all levels and management of all activities and events.

In the campaign against loose firearms, Nartatez
said the NCRPO has recorded a total of 3,091 that were either captured, confiscated, surrendered, deposited, abandoned or forfeited.

Meanwhile, the NCRPO’s anti-terrorism campaign has resulted in the neutralization of 664 communist rebels and 25,015 counter urban area operations.

Counter urban area operations are aimed at combatting deceptive propaganda by the communist movement through a variety of community engagement activities.

‘We also identify those cases of crimes perpetrated by these groups. We have legal actions for these groups and we file cases,” he added.

Nartatez, however, emphasized the vital role of public cooperation in achieving a safe and secure environment for Metro Manila residents.

Meanwhile, the NCRPO chief said some 5,552 personnel have also assisted in disaster response and relief operations in areas drenched by floods due to bad weather caused by Super Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon.
