Penang: The Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) has called on its members to enhance their investment in talent development and innovation to remain competitive in the face of ongoing transformations driven by artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and digitalisation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Brian Tan Guan Hooi, chairman of the MICCI Northern Branch, highlighted the dual nature of technological advancement, which presents both challenges and opportunities for businesses. New industries and higher-value employment are emerging as traditional job roles evolve. Tan emphasized the necessity for companies to ensure their workforce possesses not only relevant qualifications but also technical capabilities, creativity, communication skills, and a continuous learning mindset.
"AI, automation, and digitalisation will change the nature of work, but they will also create new industries and higher-value employment; our education and training systems must therefore remain closely connected to the actual needs of industry," Tan stated during his speech at the MICCI Northern Branch Annual Luncheon Dialogue 2026. The event, themed 'Beyond 2030: Navigating Global Challenges, Unlocking New Opportunities,' was graced by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow as the guest of honour.
Tan urged businesses to focus beyond immediate challenges and instead strengthen their long-term capabilities by embracing innovation, investing in people, and adapting to rapid technological changes. He noted that developing skilled talent would be crucial for companies aiming to seize new opportunities and maintain competitiveness in an increasingly complex global environment.
Furthermore, Tan called for enhanced collaboration between the public and private sectors to foster a robust ecosystem conducive to business growth. He stressed that the government plays a vital role in setting directions and creating favorable conditions, while businesses contribute through investment, innovation, experience, and employment opportunities. "Neither sector can achieve its goals alone. Honest and constructive engagement is therefore essential," he added.
Tan underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue between industry and government to ensure policies, infrastructure, and support systems align with the evolving needs of businesses. Celebrating its 189th anniversary, MICCI, which has supported the business community since 1837, continues to act as a bridge between the private sector and government by sharing industry insights and contributing practical solutions.
