MIDA-Infineon Programme Aims to Boost Malaysian Semiconductor Industry

Kuala Lumpur: A local vendor development programme jointly curated by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Infineon Technologies (Kulim) Sdn Bhd is set to benefit 139 local companies. The initiative has attracted over 190 participants and aims to enhance the capabilities of local companies in supporting the expanding semiconductor industry in Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MIDA's Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, highlighted the importance of technological advancement and human capital development in creating a resilient and competitive semiconductor ecosystem. MIDA is committed to providing structured platforms for local suppliers to improve their technological capabilities while ensuring their workforce is equipped with skills for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing.

Infineon's Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Ng Kok Tiong, underscored the company's commitment to aiding local vendors in understanding the complex requirements of high-technology wafer fabrication manufacturing. He stated that developing a pool of vendors capable of providing high-value and reliable services is essential for supporting Infineon's growth in Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of sustainable vendor development in the current business environment.

Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz remarked that the MIDA-Infineon public-private partnership allows Malaysian companies to leverage advanced manufacturing technologies, including artificial intelligence and smart connectivity solutions. The initiative aligns with the goals of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy, aiming to strengthen Malaysia's industrial ecosystem.

In August 2024, Infineon inaugurated the first phase of its 200-millimeter silicon carbide power fabrication in Kulim, an investment that has bolstered the local semiconductor ecosystem and established Infineon as a reliable partner within Malaysia's growing semiconductor hub.
