Minimum Wage Extended To Contract Apprentices As Amended Act Takes Effect

Kuala lumpur: The National Wages Consultative Council (Amendment) Act 2025 came into effect today, extending the current minimum wage to apprenticeship contract workers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) stated that Minister Steven Sim had set August 1, 2025, as the commencement date for these amendments. The amendment ensures that the existing minimum wage now applies to apprenticeship contract workers, reflecting the government's dedication to improving protection and welfare for all worker categories.

An apprenticeship contract is defined as an agreement where an employer commits to employing and systematically training an individual in a specific trade. This training period can range from six to 24 months, during which the apprentice is obligated to work for the employer.

KESUMA expressed gratitude towards employers who had already been adhering to the minimum wage standards for apprenticeship workers prior to it becoming a legal requirement. Additionally, the ministry reminded employers who pay above the minimum wage that they are not allowed to reduce salaries to merely meet the legal threshold.

The ministry announced that the Minimum Wage Order 2024 will be implemented on August 1, 2025. This order establishes a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with fewer than five employees, provided they are not engaged in professional activities as per the Malaysian Standard Classification of Occupations 2020.

Employers are urged to adhere to the minimum wage regulations enforced by the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Labour, Sabah Labour Department, and the Sarawak Labour Department. Those found guilty of non-compliance may face fines up to RM10,000 for each affected worker.
