Putrajaya:Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, has called for the Putrajaya Corporation and the Federal Territories Department to review their expected allocation under Budget 2027. The aim is to strengthen care and improve the welfare of senior citizens.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hannah Yeoh emphasized the need to adapt current approaches to meet the physical and social needs of senior citizens, particularly those who are bedridden, live alone, or have lost spouses. She noted that programmes should extend beyond physical activities like aerobics to include those that cater to the abilities and interests of seniors.
She pointed out the diverse needs of seniors, stating that the requirements of a 60-year-old differ significantly from those of an 80-year-old. Yeoh warned against organizing programmes that may be convenient for organizers but challenging for seniors to participate in.
Speaking at the Putrajaya-level Federal Territories Senior Citizens' Day celebration, Yeoh highlighted the issue of loneliness among the elderly, especially those living alone or who have lost spouses, making them vulnerable to social isolation and scams. She noted that having family members does not necessarily prevent loneliness, as busy schedules can contribute to feelings of isolation.
To address these issues, Yeoh suggested that community centers and places of worship engage with senior citizens who have lost their spouses and organize activities to prevent them from being left alone. She also recommended extending efforts to seniors unable to attend programs at Senior Citizens' Activity Centres to ensure they receive necessary social support.
Yeoh expressed her support for the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development in its initiatives to empower vulnerable groups, including senior citizens.
