Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Digital is in the process of preparing a detailed report on the legal requirements related to artificial intelligence (AI) to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat. Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced that a study on AI has been initiated by the National AI Office (NAIO) and will be submitted to his ministry soon.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, once the NAIO presents the study, the Ministry of Digital will then bring it to the Cabinet for a decision on the next course of action. Gobind Singh Deo shared this information with reporters after launching the 'Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti' campaign by CIMB Group Holdings Bhd.
The government will consider whether there is a need to enact specific legislation on AI or simply introduce standards and regulations, as is practiced in some other countries. AI is a sector that spans across various industries, and certain areas may require legal provisions due to higher risks and the necessity for structured actions to ensure proper implementation.
Gobind further stated that not all AI-related areas require legal regulation, but can be effectively managed through the formulation of standards or guidelines. The ministry aims to identify and broadly outline which aspects of AI need regulation and the types of regulation required, whether in terms of standards, rules, or legislation.
