Ministry Targets Smart Toilets in Every State Capital in Malaysia

Putrajaya:The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is aiming to install at least one 'Bersih, Menawan dan Wangi' (BMW-i) smart toilet in each state capital across Malaysia, with construction costs limited to RM1 million per unit.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming noted that the initiative began in Putrajaya and has since expanded to Kuala Lumpur. Plans are underway to introduce these facilities in other state capitals such as Ipoh, George Town, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Johor Bahru.

The BMW-i toilet at Dataran Putra features advanced technologies including automatic seat covers, flushing systems, touchless taps, and an IoT-based fragrance system. It also includes environmental sensors, a user-counting system, automated cleaning and drying systems, and a mobile application for operational efficiency.

Minister Nga explained that the BMW-i initiative is part of KPKT's broader efforts to modernize public facilities with smart technology. This approach aims to maintain high hygiene and maintenance standards, ultimately benefiting the public and enhancing Malaysia's international image.

Since 2023, in collaboration with local authorities and the Ministry of Education, KPKT has upgraded over 11,835 toilets nationwide to meet the BMW standards. This includes the refurbishment of 1,592 public toilets and facilities in 10,243 schools.

Currently, 80.8% of the 3,940 public toilets under local authority management have achieved a four-star rating or higher. Minister Nga emphasized that clean public toilets are vital for attracting tourists to Malaysia, especially with the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign.

Additionally, the ministry plans to hold the Best Toilet of the Year Award (TOTYA) 2026 on October 20, recognizing various efforts to improve public toilet quality. The awards will cover categories such as shopping complexes, petrol stations, hotels, and schools.
