Yan: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained an individual operating a fibre boat and seized 48 units of "bubu naga" in the waters of Kuala Sungai Dedap in Yan yesterday. The Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Noor Azreyanti Ishak, said they detained the unlicensed boat at 11.30 am during a routine integrated patrol operation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the crew member, a 30-year-old Malaysian, attempted to flee towards land but was apprehended. Upon inspecting the boat, authorities discovered 48 units of "bubu naga," which have been banned due to their potential to harm the marine ecosystem and threaten marine life populations.
The seizures, including the boat valued at an estimated RM112,000, were taken to the Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone Jetty. Noor Azreyanti stated that the investigation is being conducted under Section 8(a) and Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985, pertaining to operating a boat without a licence and using unauthorised equipment.
She further warned that stern action would be taken against those who violate the rules and urged the public to report any incidents of illegal fishing or suspicious activities via the emergency hotline 999 or the Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 04-731 0579.
