MMEA Seizes RM84 Million in Maritime Offences Since Start of 2025

Putrajaya: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has conducted 851 seizure cases involving various maritime offences from January to July this year, with a total of RM84 million in seizures. These cases encompassed offences such as intrusion by foreign fishermen, human trafficking, smuggling of cigarettes, alcohol, subsidised goods, and vessel violations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MMEA's acting deputy director-general of operations, Rear Admiral (M) Mohd Zawawi Abdullah, stated that while there have been no arrests related to firearms smuggling, the agency, in cooperation with all enforcement agencies in the country, remains vigilant in conducting operations and exchanging pertinent information. The most prevalent forms of smuggling include cigarettes, human trafficking, and drugs.

Mohd Zawawi highlighted the use of new methods by syndicates, such as employing drones to monitor areas before attempting smuggling operations. He recounted experiences from his tenure in northern Malaysia, where syndicates smuggled items like cockle seeds, ketum, and drugs, often utilizing drones. Collaborations with the police and armed forces at the border have been instrumental in thwarting several smuggling attempts.

To counter these challenges, the MMEA plans to enhance its operational capabilities by acquiring new assets, including the AgustaWestland AW189 helicopter and the ex-United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Steadfast. The agency is set to receive four AW189 helicopters, which will enhance their ability to conduct flights and search and rescue operations over larger areas.
