Penang: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is stepping up efforts to raise public awareness of maritime safety through its participation in the 'Jelajah Wira MADANI' programme here.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang MMEA director Maritime Captain Muhammad Sufi Mohd Ramli said the programme, organised at the Penang police contingent level, also provided an opportunity for the agency to engage with the public and promote its roles and functions, particularly as Penang is an island state surrounded by strategic and commercial waters.
Visitors can view replicas of MMEA assets, official firearms, diving equipment used in search and rescue (SAR) operations, as well as ship inspection equipment used in maritime enforcement operations.
'The programme also serves as a platform to expose youths to career opportunities in the maritime safety and enforcement sector,' he said in a statement today.
The programme was officiated by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay at the Region One Marine Police Force headquarters in Batu Uban here today.
Throughout the programme, the MMEA also conducted maritime safety awareness activities targeting fishermen, tourist boat operators, and water sports enthusiasts.
It also highlighted cross-border crimes such as drug smuggling, intrusion by foreign vessels, and human trafficking to raise public awareness of the importance of safeguarding the nation's waters.
