Kelantan: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kelantan has issued a reminder to the fishing community and boat operators in the state to exercise heightened caution during the upcoming Northeast Monsoon (MTL) period, which is expected to bring unpredictable sea conditions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Maritime Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi of the MMEA highlighted the potential dangers posed by sudden weather changes during the monsoon season, particularly for fishermen using small boats. He urged all involved parties to prioritize safety measures, such as wearing life jackets and adhering to established safety procedures before embarking on any sea activities.
Captain Erwan also advised fishermen to inform their immediate family members about their fishing locations and expected duration at sea to facilitate prompt actions in case of emergencies. He further recommended the adoption of a 'buddy system,' where fishermen go out in pairs as a precautionary strategy.
"In the event of an emergency at sea, the presence of a friend can help to report it immediately so that rescue teams can carry out search and rescue operations quickly and effectively. With the initial information obtained, victims facing problems at sea can be assisted immediately and rescued from any disaster," he stated to reporters.
Captain Erwan assured that MMEA will maintain vigilant monitoring of sea conditions and remain prepared to conduct rescue operations as needed to ensure the safety of the maritime community in Kelantan waters.
