Accra:The national motorcycle manufacturer Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) is considering entering the Egyptian market by late 2027 or 2028. The initiative aims to establish Egypt as a key export hub for Modenas motorcycles across Africa and the Middle East.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Modenas CEO Roslan Roskan revealed that discussions are underway with a potential partner in Egypt who is interested in Modenas' scooter and electric motorcycle models. The company plans to provide product samples for market evaluation and pricing assessments soon.
This strategic move follows an invitation from Proton, a fellow company under the DRB-HICOM group, to explore motorcycle export opportunities in Egypt using Proton's existing business network. The discussions with the Egyptian team focus on two-wheelers, which aligns with Proton's operations in the region.
Roslan highlighted the potential of Egypt to serve as a regional distribution hub due to its trade agreements with African and Middle Eastern countries, which could facilitate broader market access for Modenas products. He also mentioned the company's goal to expand its international presence, building on current exports to the Philippines, China, Indonesia, and the Middle East.
In related developments, Proton Holdings Bhd's Deputy CEO Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa emphasized the company's efforts to strengthen its foothold in Egypt and expand into the African market. Proton plans to introduce new vehicle models, including SUVs and electric vehicles, to capitalize on the growing demand.
Proton's operations in Egypt are supported by a completely knocked-down assembly, which contributes to the local automotive industry. The company is also planning to upgrade the Saga model to a newer version, focusing on improved fuel efficiency and performance, while ensuring compliance with Egyptian market requirements.
Abdul Rashid also noted Proton's achievements at the Egypt Car of the Year Awards 2026, where it won accolades for Best Year-on-Year Sales Growth and Best Economic Competitiveness. Looking ahead, Proton intends to introduce more models tailored to market preferences and regulatory conditions in Egypt and other export destinations.
