Modenas Plans to Make Egypt a Key Export Hub by 2028

Kuala Lumpur:National motorcycle manufacturer Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) is planning to enter the Egyptian market by late 2027 or 2028. The company aims to establish Egypt as a strategic export hub for its motorcycles, targeting markets across Africa and the Middle East.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Modenas CEO Roslan Roskan stated that discussions are underway with a potential Egyptian partner interested in Modenas' scooter and electric motorcycle models. Modenas will soon provide product samples for market evaluation and pricing assessments.

The initiative follows an invitation from fellow DRB-HICOM group company Proton to explore motorcycle export opportunities in Egypt using its existing business network. Roskan sees Egypt as having significant potential as a regional distribution hub due to its trade agreements with countries in Africa and the Middle East, which could provide Modenas products with broader market access.

Modenas is also looking to expand its international footprint beyond existing exports to markets such as the Philippines, China, Indonesia, and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Proton Holdings Bhd's Deputy CEO, Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa, emphasized the company's efforts to strengthen its presence in Egypt and expand further into the African market by introducing new vehicle models. The focus will be on meeting the growing demand for SUVs and the potential of electric vehicles.

Proton's presence in Egypt is bolstered by a completely knocked-down operation that involves welding, painting, and vehicle assembly. This operation supports the local automotive industry and economy. Proton plans to transition its assembly operations in Egypt, which were launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2024, from the Saga model to its newer version, enhancing fuel efficiency and performance to meet local specifications.

Abdul Rashid highlighted Proton's success at the Egypt Car of the Year Awards 2026, where the company won awards for Best Year-on-Year Sales Growth and Best Economic Competitiveness. Looking ahead, Proton intends to introduce more models in Egypt and other export markets, considering various market preferences and regulatory requirements.
