Accra:National motorcycle manufacturer Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) is planning to enter the Egyptian market by late 2027 or 2028. The company aims to position Egypt as a strategic export hub for its motorcycles across Africa and the Middle East.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Modenas CEO Roslan Roskan revealed that the company is in discussions with a potential Egyptian partner interested in its scooter and electric motorcycle models. To facilitate market evaluation and pricing assessments, product samples will soon be provided.
This initiative follows an invitation from Proton, a fellow DRB-HICOM group company, to explore motorcycle export opportunities in Egypt using its business network. Modenas is currently communicating with the same team as Proton's partner in Egypt, focusing on two-wheelers.
Roslan highlighted Egypt's potential as a regional distribution hub due to its trade agreements with African and Middle Eastern countries. This could allow Modenas products wider market access.
In addition to exploring opportunities in Egypt, Modenas is also planning to expand its international footprint, building on current exports to the Philippines, China, Indonesia, and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Proton Holdings Bhd's Deputy CEO Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa stated that the national carmaker is working to strengthen its presence in Egypt and expand into the African market. The company plans to introduce new vehicle models in response to the growing demand for sport utility vehicles and electric vehicles.
Proton's operations in Egypt include a completely knocked-down assembly process, contributing to the local automotive industry and economy. The company has a strong partnership in Egypt and aims to leverage strong bilateral relations between Malaysia and Egypt to facilitate market entry.
Abdul Rashid noted that Proton's assembly operations in Egypt, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2024, initially focused on the Saga model, with plans to transition to a newer version tailored to meet local specifications and regulatory requirements. Proton has also received two awards at the Egypt Car of the Year Awards 2026 for Best Year-on-Year Sales Growth and Best Economic Competitiveness.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's recent state visit to Malaysia, marking his first since taking office in 2014, signifies a step toward strengthening Malaysia-Egypt relations to a Strategic Partnership.
