MOE Aims to Table Education Act 1996 Amendment Bill in Current Dewan Rakyat Session

Semenyih: The Ministry of Education (MOE) is optimistic about tabling the Bill to amend the Education Act 1996, aiming to make education compulsory up to the secondary school level, during the current session of the Dewan Rakyat. Fadhlina Sidek, the Minister of Education, shared that the amendment process is presently in the engagement session phase.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadhlina emphasized that engagement sessions are ongoing to gather support from all stakeholders for the amendment. "Engagement sessions are still being held from time to time to ensure that all parties are with us to support the amendment of this act. Now we are waiting for our turn, our hope is in this session if not, in the next parliamentary session," she stated. Fadhlina made these remarks during her visit to Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Pelangi, Semenyih, marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 school session, an event also attended by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

On December 19, Fadhlina mentioned that the bill is anticipated to be tabled in February 2025. She also disclosed that the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has reviewed the matter, indicating progress in the legislative process.

Additionally, Fadhlina highlighted that approximately 4.93 million students across the nation are set to begin the 2025/2026 school session, with primary schools accommodating 2.83 million students and secondary schools hosting 2.09 million students.
