The education ministry (moe) has been urged to align the bullying complaint mechanism at school:ullying Act 2026 to ensure immediate protection for students. Wanita PKR Central Leadership Council member Karen Kasturi emphasized the need for this alignment to include a pathway to the Tribunal for Anti-Bullying for cases that meet the requirements and fall within its jurisdiction.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Karen Kasturi stated that the complaint system should not be complicated, as it currently forces students, parents, or guardians to navigate multiple channels without clarity on follow-up actions. She highlighted the importance of conducting a risk assessment regarding the student's safety and wellbeing following every serious complaint, along with clear identification of the responsible party, a defined timeframe for action, continuous monitoring, and notification to parents or guardians.
Karen Kasturi further emphasized that protection for students must begin as soon as a complaint is received. Students who lodge complaints should be shielded from any retaliation, threats, pressure, stigma, or discrimination as a result of speaking out. The statement was released in the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of a 14-year-old female student, linked to alleged bullying and racist remarks at a school in the capital.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has since directed the Inspectorate of Schools, the PPD, and the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Education Department to expedite the internal investigation into the student's death. She underscored the importance of addressing public concerns, especially those related to bullying and racism, with urgency and adherence to facts and due process.
