MOH Seeks Collaboration to Address Rising Chronic Kidney Disease Cases in Malaysia

Shah Alam: The Health Ministry (MOH) is actively seeking collaboration with various parties to tackle the growing issue of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Malaysia. Health deputy director-general (Medicine) Datuk Dr Nor Azimi Yunus expressed concern over the increasing number of chronic kidney patients, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Nor Azimi noted an alarming upward trend in CKD diagnoses each year, based on recent data. The Health Ministry is open to receiving input from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the private sector, and related government agencies to develop effective strategies to address this critical health concern.

"The government has implemented multiple initiatives, yet existing efforts need intensification. The current statistics reveal that 50,000 individuals with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) were on chronic dialysis in 2023, with over 10,000 new patients beginning dialysis annually, a figure expected to double by 2040," Dr Nor Azimi stated. He made these remarks during the opening of the forum, 'Living Well With CKD: Empowering Knowledge and Community Support', aligned with the national-level World Kidney Day celebration.

Meanwhile, Malaysian National Kidney Foundation (NKF) vice-chairman Dr T Thiruventhiran affirmed the foundation's commitment to supporting MOH's efforts in developing strategies for prevention, detection, and treatment of kidney disease. Dr Thiruventhiran emphasized that a comprehensive approach across various sectors is essential for making significant progress in reducing patient burdens and enhancing the overall well-being of Malaysians.

The forum, hosted at Management and Science University (MSU) Shah Alam, featured patient experiences and the role of medical practitioners in combating kidney disease. It also facilitated discussions among key stakeholders on strategic measures to reinforce efforts in managing the rising CKD cases in the country.
