Monsoon Season Preparations: JKM Upgrades PPS Facilities for Persons with Disabilities

Penang: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) is upgrading facilities at relief centres (PPS) nationwide to better cater to the needs of persons with disabilities (PwD), particularly those with visual and hearing impairments, during the monsoon season. JKM director-general Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan announced the improvements, which prioritize dedicated spaces for PwD and support services such as sign language interpreters for the hearing-impaired.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Che Murad Sayang emphasized the importance of addressing diverse categories of disabilities, highlighting the need for appropriate facilities and services. JKM is committed to enhancing preparations to safeguard the welfare of all groups, including bedridden individuals. These efforts aim to ensure that all necessary support is readily available during adverse weather conditions.

Che Murad Sayang also mentioned bolstering logistical preparations to ensure disaster supply depots are well-stocked for at least three to four days before additional aid arrives. The annual PPS management simulation exercises are crucial for ensuring agency readiness and educating the public on disaster response procedures.

The Social Welfare Department is in constant communication with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to monitor areas at higher risk of flooding, with particular focus on states like Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Johor. In these flood-prone regions, JKM ensures disaster supply depots are adequately stocked and that its 6,000 volunteers receive practical training to respond effectively.

Furthermore, JKM has identified 9,000 PPS nationwide, with activation depending on affected areas. The department collaborates with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) to manage 18 permanent relief centres, staffed jointly by both agencies.

Che Murad Sayang encouraged community leaders and the public to utilize the MyBIJKM application to pre-register household details, including information on PwD, the elderly, and individuals requiring assistance. This proactive approach aims to facilitate swift and targeted assistance, particularly for those with specific needs during emergencies.
