Klang: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has firmly stated that mosques and suraus in the state must be free from partisan political influence and should not be utilized to promote personal or political agendas. His Royal Highness emphasized that these religious spaces are not arenas for political activities or venues to create discord among Muslims; rather, they should serve as centers for worship, guidance, and unity within the community.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sultan expressed his disapproval of politicians who attempt to disguise their political motives through religious talks, using mosques and suraus as platforms for their agendas. He also warned mosque officials and committee members against involvement in partisan politics, stating that holding political positions while serving in religious capacities could disrupt harmony among congregations.
During the presentation of appointments to 850 nazirs and imams at Balairong Seri, Istana Alam Shah, Sultan Sharafuddin underscored that the roles of nazir and imam are sacred trusts, not political positions for personal gain. He urged for unity and cautioned against competition for positions within mosque management, highlighting the potential for dissatisfaction and division.
The Sultan also addressed financial management, insisting that mosque and surau funds be managed with transparency and integrity, in alignment with regulations set by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS). Financial reports are to be submitted every four months to ensure accountability and public trust.
Sultan Sharafuddin warned against any misappropriation of funds, emphasizing that such resources stem from public donations and must be used responsibly according to Islamic principles. He expressed concern over the negative perception of Islam due to cases of fund misuse by Malay Muslims and stressed that the sanctity of Islam must be preserved.
