Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is intensifying its efforts to enhance public awareness and understanding of nuclear technology in rural regions, including Orang Asli villages, to ensure inclusive technological progress across the nation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister Datuk Mohamad Yusof Apdal emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing the common misconception that nuclear technology is solely linked to weaponry. He highlighted the potential of nuclear technology in various sectors such as energy, healthcare, and agriculture, which could significantly benefit rural communities including the Orang Asli.
"We find that public awareness of the benefits of nuclear technology is still low. When nuclear is mentioned, many link it to weapons, when in fact this technology holds great potential. It can benefit rural communities, including the Orang Asli, whether as an energy source or a catalyst for economic development," he stated during a press conference marking the conclusion of the nuclear technology satellite programme 'Santuni Kasih Rakyat 2025 Kelantan' at Jeti Kasih, Kampung Pasir Pekan Tengah.
Mohamad Yusof explained that the programme's theme, 'Teknologi Nuklear Santuni Kasih Rakyat,' aligns with Malaysia's MADANI aspirations. It aims to convey the message that nuclear technology should be accessible and beneficial to all citizens, not just a select few.
"The MADANI Rakyat 2025 programme demonstrates the government's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of advancements in science, technology, and innovation reach all segments of society, regardless of location, ethnicity, or socio-economic background," he added.
He further noted that the Malaysian Nuclear Agency has developed a variety of nuclear technology-based products and services that are safe and impactful, benefiting the public in fields such as medicine, agriculture, industry, and the environment.
Moreover, the Malaysian Nuclear Agency collaborates with universities and industry players, including both public and private hospitals, to ensure that high-quality research and development (R and D) outcomes are translated effectively into practical applications for end users.
"Indirectly, this helps ensure that expertise in nuclear technology continues to contribute to improving the people's quality of life," he said. He also remarked on the significance of selecting Kelantan as the location for this satellite programme, acknowledging the state's rich cultural heritage and potential to excel in the modern technological era.
