Kota bharu: The mother of a baby who tested positive for drugs is not a drug addict, as her urine test only detected benzodiazepine (Benzo), said Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. He stated that the woman informed the police that the Benzo found in her urine was due to medication she was taking for anxiety.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat clarified during a press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters that a urine test conducted on the woman revealed the presence of Benzo, which is similar to ketum, but she claimed it was used for managing anxiety. He emphasized that the Benzo detected was linked to her prescribed medication for anxiety and not illicit drug use. However, investigations regarding the substances found in the baby's system are still ongoing.
Mohd Yusoff further noted that the woman's urine test returned negative results for methamphetamine and other drugs. The ongoing investigations are focused on the baby's positive test results for two types of substances, raising concerns and necessitating further inquiry.
The incident came to light on August 12, when a baby girl tested positive for amphetamine and benzodiazepines during a urine screening at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital. Following this, the baby's 30-year-old mother was detained to assist in the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
