Kuala lumpur: The National Economic Action Council (MTEN) has undertaken a study to diversify fuel input sources, enhance strategic cooperation with key trading partners, and ensure the security of production inputs in response to the ongoing global energy crisis. Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir emphasized the government's focus on bolstering the nation's supply resilience during a briefing broadcast live on local television.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and other relevant agencies have been tasked with implementing measures to address the situation. Concurrently, Bank Negara Malaysia has been directed to provide financial support to firms affected by the crisis. The Economy Ministry is coordinating a comprehensive approach that includes macroeconomic, fiscal, financial, and sectoral policies to ensure all measures are mutually supportive and effective.
Nasrullah also announced several practical measures to alleviate daily pressures and ensure operational continuity. These include introducing flexible working hours and implementing a work-from-home policy for the public service sector, effective April 15, 2026, except for critical sectors such as security, healthcare, and education.
During today's MTEN meeting, three key papers were discussed: measures to combat leakages and smuggling, national security of medicines and medical devices, and the impact of the global energy crisis on haj operations. The strategies include enhancing supply chain surveillance, integrating Ops Tiris 4.0 with various agencies, and adopting a 'whole of nation' approach to address these challenges.
Short-term measures to secure medicines and medical devices include central monitoring of drug stocks, diversifying import sources, and designating certain items as controlled. Medium- and long-term strategies are also being considered, such as establishing a national strategic buffer stock and developing a national medicine security policy.
On the haj operations, MTEN reviewed the status of 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims, focusing on their safety amid the uncertain global environment. The government remains committed to ensuring strategic national supplies are secure and the economy remains resilient.
Nasrullah concluded by stating the government's objective is not only to monitor the crisis but to manage its impact, mitigate risks, and help citizens navigate this challenging period effectively.
