Kangar: Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has extended an invitation to academics from the Muhammadiyah University (UM) network in Indonesia to pursue postgraduate studies at the institution, offering opportunities at both the Master's and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UniMAP's deputy vice-chancellor (academic and international), Prof Dr Mohd Shukry Abdul Majid, announced that the university is providing fee reductions for lecturers or academics who register in groups. "For example, if 20 lecturers register, UniMAP will provide a 20 per cent fee reduction. If the number is larger, a higher discount rate will be considered," he stated. This announcement came after a discussion aimed at exploring collaboration opportunities between UniMAP and UM Bandung during the UniMAP International Leadership Mobility 2025 event.
During the visit, a Letter of Intent was exchanged between Mohd Shukry and UM Bandung rector Prof Dr Herry Suhardiyanto, witnessed by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who serves as UniMAP chancellor. Also present was Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, the pro-chancellor of UniMAP.
Mohd Shukry highlighted that the invitation is extended not only to lecturers from UM's network of 170 universities across Indonesia but also to the university's alumni, encouraging them to pursue studies at UniMAP in various fields. He noted that this collaboration aims to facilitate joint academic publications between UM and UniMAP alongside obtaining higher academic qualifications.
Meanwhile, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin emphasized that UM's direction aligns with UniMAP's aspirations to produce graduates who excel in knowledge, skills, and character, rooted in integrity and leadership values. He expressed hope that the visit would pave the way for more academic collaborations, including student and lecturer exchanges, joint research, and social empowerment efforts benefiting communities in both countries.
Herry stated that UM Bandung was honored to host the chancellor and his delegation, affirming their readiness to identify lecturers in need of academic advancement to bolster existing capabilities.
